The History of Buc-ee's

The Buc-ee's story began in 1982 when Arch "Beaver" Aplin III and Don Wasek opened the first location in Lake Jackson, Texas. What started as a small convenience store has grown into one of the most recognized travel center brands in America.

The distinctive name combines Aplin's childhood nickname "Beaver" with a nod to his dog Buck, and draws inspiration from the cheerful Bucky the Beaver character from vintage Ipana toothpaste advertisements. That buck-toothed beaver mascot has since become an icon of Texas road trip culture.

For decades, Buc-ee's remained exclusively a Texas phenomenon. That changed in 2019 when the first location outside the Lone Star State opened in Alabama, marking the beginning of a regional expansion across the South. Today, Buc-ee's operates in 11 states with 54 locations and counting.
