Aplin graduated from Texas A&M University in 1980 and just two years later launched Buc-ee's. The name combines his childhood nickname "Beaver" with his Labrador Retriever's name, Buck, plus inspiration from Ipana toothpaste's animated mascot, Bucky the beaver.

A Geographic Curiosity

This original store sits at the intersection of Oyster Creek Drive and Old Angleton Road. A sign next to the parking lot reads "Welcome to the City of Clute," though the address is officially Lake Jackson.
